Big Ideas

Patterns represent identified regularities. There is always an element of repetition.
Patterns can be represented in a variety of ways (i.e. pictures, words, graphs, sequences, tables).
Some ways of displaying data highlight patterns.
Algebra is a way to represent and explain mathematical relationships and to describe and analyze change.
Using variables is a way to efficiently and generally describe relationships.
(These big ideas are adapted from the book "Big Ideas from Dr. Small" by Marian Small)

Student Learning Goals

I can use the core of a repeating pattern to make predictions.

I can determine the transformation in a growing pattern.

I can extend a pattern and find missing terms within patterns.
I can determine the general pattern rule (equation) for a linear growing pattern.
I can represent patterns as graphs, sequences, tables, pictures, and words.
I can determine the value of variables in algebraic equations.
I can substitute a number into an algebraic equation.
